Before the "Purple Guy" became a meme, he was William Afton, a co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment. Alongside his partner, Henry Emily, William revolutionized child entertainment with the creation of Springlock Animatronics. However, while Henry built for joy, William built for a darker purpose: the study of Remnant—the supernatural energy that binds human consciousness to machines through physical pain and metal.
The tragedy officially began in 1983 with the Bite of '83 at Fredbear’s Family Diner, involving William's son. This event shattered the partnership and drove William to commit his first murder: the killing of Charlotte Emily (Henry's daughter) outside the restaurant. Charlie's soul entered the Security Puppet, becoming the catalyst that allowed other souls to possess the robots.
In the official game lore, the Missing Children Incident (MCI) occurred on June 26th. William Afton used a "Spring Bonnie" suit to lure children into a back room. These five souls were then "given life" by the Puppet, who stuffed them into the heavy, mechanical animatronic suits of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Their real names are the key to the entire FNAF puzzle:
The night guard you control, officially listed in the game as Mike Schmidt, is actually Michael Afton. He is the eldest son of William Afton. Following the commands of his father to "find his sister" and seeking redemption for his brother's death, Michael travels to various Freddy's locations under aliases to undo the damage his father caused. Michael is effectively a "walking corpse" in later games, but in FNAF 1, he is still a man desperately trying to survive the week.
FREDDY FAZBEAR (GABRIEL): 7/10
Freddy is a strategic hunter. He moves through the shadows (Cam 1A, 1B, 7, 6, 4A, 4B). You can hear his deep laughter every time he changes rooms. If the power hits 0%, his "Toreador March" song is the last thing you'll hear.
BONNIE THE BUNNY (JEREMY): 8/10
The most active threat. Bonnie moves the fastest and always approaches from the Left Door. In the lore, Scott Cawthon (the creator) admitted he had nightmares about Bonnie during development.
CHICA THE CHICKEN (SUSIE): 6/10
Chica stalks the Right Door. You can hear her clattering in the Kitchen (Cam 6), which is the only room with a broken video feed. She often stays at the window to drain your power through sheer intimidation.
FOXY THE PIRATE (FRITZ): 9/10
Foxy hides in Pirate Cove (Cam 1C). Unlike the others, he is "out of order." He is a speed-based threat; if you don't check him, he will sprint down the West Hallway. You must shut the Left Door immediately.
To reach the true ending and understand the lore, you must notice the small, shifting details in the environment:
Years after FNAF 1 closed, William Afton returned to the restaurant to destroy the animatronics and harvest their Remnant. He dismantled Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, but in doing so, he released the trapped spirits. Cornered in the Secret Safe Room (not seen on cameras), William donned the Spring Bonnie suit to hide. Because of the leaking roof, the dampness caused a Springlock Failure. The suit's metal parts snapped into his body, killing him slowly. This transformed him into Springtrap.
DEPARTMENT OF INVESTIGATION: CASE #1983-ALPHA
Alias: "The Purple Guy" / Co-Founder of Fazbear Ent.
1. Jealousy & Grief: After his youngest son died in the Bite of '83, William grew resentful of Henry's success and stable family life. He wanted Henry to suffer the same loss.
2. Discovery of Remnant: After Charlie possessed the Puppet, William realized that human souls could survive inside metal. He became obsessed with the science of "life after death."
3. Fear of Death: William realized he was going to die eventually. By killing more children, he could experiment with how to "trap" a soul, hoping to find a way to make himself immortal within a mechanical body.
The most important character in the FNAF franchise. While William Afton took lives, The Puppet gave them back. As the soul of Henry's daughter, Charlie, she realized the children's spirits were trapped and confused.
Primary Directive: "Give Gifts, Give Life." In the Give Gifts, Give Life minigame, we see her physically placing the heads of the animatronics onto the dead children's souls, binding them to the metal so they could fight back. Without the Puppet, there would be no possessed Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, or Foxy.
On Cam 4B, the "Rules for Safety" sign can randomly change into four different news articles. These provide the dark backstory of the Missing Children Incident and the health department threats.
On Cam 4A, the posters of Freddy can vanish, replaced by black-and-white drawings of children crying. This is a direct psychic manifestation of the souls suffering inside.
When Golden Freddy appears in your office, he has no eyes. This represents Cassidy, the spirit who refuses to move on and is "The One You Should Not Have Killed."
Entering 1987 into the Custom Night AI levels will trigger a Golden Freddy jumpscare. This was Scott Cawthon’s way of stopping fans from hunting for a "secret ending" that didn't exist in the first game.
"I WILL PUT YOU BACK TOGETHER." — The Final Promise
These words, spoken to the Bite victim, set the stage for Michael Afton's lifelong journey through the haunted pizzerias.
Q: Is Mike Schmidt an Afton?
A: Yes. The "Survival Logbook" (a real-world lore book) confirms Mike is Michael Afton through his drawings and knowledge of the "Nightmare" animatronics.
Q: Who is the "Phone Guy"?
A: He is a senior employee who recorded messages for the guard. He was killed on Night 4 by the combined efforts of the animatronics, with Golden Freddy delivering the final blow.
Q: Why do the eyes glow?
A: That is the physical manifestation of Remnant. When a soul is active and possessing the suit, the mechanical eyes often glow white or disappear entirely to show the "spirit" is in control.
